The modern consumer seems to live happily in the fulfilment of his imagined needs.

Power.
Performance.
Affiliation.

Your clothes write your narrative. Products become carriers of meaning. Your own body becomes a display of values, conformity to norms or rebellion, provides information about your social status - your level of education, your background. In times of constant status comparison, our consumption tells the world that we work hard, pursue dreams and are informed. This demonstrative consumption is based on a value system that assumes that our social standing depends primarily on our material standard of living.

There is this illusion that if I were there, whatever "there" means, then almost all my problems would be solved.
